Horizontal position welding for storage tank erection is the most weld time consuming part of a tank project, SAW offers the most effective solution in terms of quality and productivity, but it’s consumable selection requires consideration of the following:

Easy slag removal on both root and fill passes
Excellent weld bead appearance
Suitable to weld shell materials according to API 650 with the correct combination of wire

Low C, medium Mn, high Si and 1% Ni SAW wire
Use with basic neutral fluxes in order to obtain excellent impact properties
EGW offers the most effective vertical welding solution for storage tanks and heavy wall structures in terms of quality and productivity, but the capacity to weld up to 50mm (2″) inches thick wall in a single pass at very high deposition requires a specific grade of wire under the AWS classification such as EG70T-2 or equivalent. Below are the features of the EGW wire that is necessary to be considered for an application:
Mechanical Properties against the parent material grade and the operation condition of the welded structure.
EGW wire for low temperature operation will be required for specific applications such as cryogenic storage tanks or beam structures with high toughness requirements in sub zero temperatures.

That is the reason why EGW wires are commonly available as self shielded wire (EGW-SS) or gas shielded wire (EGW-GS).
